🌲🗺️ Welcome to one of the most dramatic, postcard-perfect landscapes in Switzerland: Appenzell Inner-Rhodes! 🇨🇭 For today's adventure, we are tackling an absolute Swiss classic. This trail perfectly captures my philosophy—"Live the Life, Own the Place"—by mixing incredible alpine engineering, deep history, and jaw-dropping cliffside views. Grab your boots, and let’s break down this unforgettable day trip step-by-step!
🥾👇 1. The Ascent: Wasserauen to Ebenalp Cable Car 🚠 Starting Elevation: 868 m (Wasserauen) Top Station Elevation: 1,590 m (Ebenalp) The Ride: Ebenalpbahn Our journey kicks off at the bottom of the valley in Wasserauen. There’s plenty of parking here, and it's also the final stop on the charming Appenzell regional train. To save our legs for the high ridges, we’re hopping on the Ebenalp cable car. In just 6 minutes, this red cabin sweeps you up past dense pine forests and vertical limestone cliffs, dropping you at 1,590 meters. The moment you step off the platform, you are hit with a massive 360-degree panorama. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Lake Constance to the north!
🏔️✨ 2. Walking Through History: The Wildkirchli Caves 🦇 Elevation: ~1,480 m The Trail: A well-secured, downhill path hugging the cliffside From the top station, we start a scenic 20-minute descent. This isn't just any regular trail—the path literally cuts through the mountain! ⛰️ First, you’ll walk through the massive, prehistoric Wildkirchli Caves (where researchers actually found 40,000-year-old cave bear bones! 🐻). As you exit the cave, the trail turns into a wooden boardwalk bolted directly into the sheer rock face. Here, you'll discover the famous cave chapels founded by hermits back in the 17th century. Walking under these massive natural stone arches with the valley floor far below is an incredible feeling.
3. The Swiss Icon: Berggasthaus Aescher 🏡🍺 Elevation: 1,454 m The Highlight: Switzerland’s most famous cliffside guesthouse Follow the cliff path for just a few more steps, turn the corner, and boom—there it is. The legendary Berggasthaus Aescher. Clinging to a vertical 100-meter rock wall, this 140-year-old wooden mountain inn looks like it completely defies gravity. Sitting out on that terrace, enjoying a fresh coffee or a plate of traditional Swiss Röstis while sheltered by the massive overhanging cliff, is pure magic. The architecture blends so flawlessly with the geology; it’s the ultimate definition of owning the moment. 📸 Postcard views don't get better than this!
4. The Steep Descent to Seealpsee 🌲💧 Target Elevation: 1,143 m (Seealpsee) The Challenge: A steep, rocky mountain descent After refueling at the Aescher, it's time to head down into the valley. The trail plunges into cool mountain forests and follows limestone switchbacks heading toward Seealpsee. You can catch glimpses of it from above—glowing like a bright emerald jewel nestled between the peaks.
💎 ⚠️ Quick Safety Tip: This section is quite steep and requires your full attention and a sturdy pair of hiking boots with good grip. The non-stop views of the towering Säntis massif keep you motivated the whole way down! As you descend, the air gets warmer, the classic sound of Appenzeller cowbells fills the air, and the trail finally levels out on the shores of the lake at 1,143 meters.
